The armour and weaponry of a samurai were incredibly valuable. So valuable in fact, that if a samurai was slain in battle, he would likely be stripped of his possessions by thieves and scavengers. Some members of the warrior class therefore chose to don tattoos—that way, even if their armour was stolen, their elite status would be known and their body could be returned to their family. When faced with choosing a subject for their tattoo, the tiger, or tora, was a logical choice for many samurai. Representing strength and courage, a tiger tattoo served as good luck and protection when facing even the fiercest enemy.
